Ski Jumping Race Begins in Erzurum

Russian Federation became the first in the medal ranking with 54 medals. Turkey finished the games as 20th with 2 gold and 7 bronze medals.

2500 athletes competed in 9 different sports, 11 sport areas and cycling raceway. Russian Federation is first in the medal ranking with 21 gold, 17 silver, and 16 bronze medals which makes 54 medals in total. Great Britain is the second with 17 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze medals, which is totally 33 medals. Ukraine is the third with 8 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals and in total 15 medals. Turkey became the twentieth with 2 gold and 7 bronze medals. We believe that the first multisport winter games organized by Turkey will leave an important legacy in the country for the young sportsman and woman of the future.

We hope that all of you who have contributed to this event, no matter what your duties were will forever cherish your role in making this Winter Universiade 2011 a huge success. FISU FLAG HANDS OVER TO MARIBOR

As it was time to hand over the FISU flag to the next organizer, the Erzurum Mayor handed the flag back to FISU President Killian, who handed it over the delegate of the Organizing Committee of the 2013 Winter Universiade which will be hosted in Maribor, Slovenia. The Slovenian delegation then gave a short performance inviting the participants to their country for the next games.

The closing ceremony ended with the a spectacular cultural performance together with Kıraç concert and fireworks.

Some measures are taken for the further transportation of the audiences who want to attend the closing ceremony.

05.02.2011-ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA- The 25th WU, that started with an outstanding opening ceremony on the 27th of Januray, will end tomorrow with an amazing closing ceremony.

Some measures are taken in order to facilitate transportation of the people who will attend closing ceremony. Erzurum Fair Area, Terminal Square and Garden of the Galeria are determined as a parking areas for the closing ceremony. It is announced that people who park their cars in the specific points, will use public transport vehicles. On the route from State Waterworks (DSI) junction to the entrance of the University, from the route of the entrance of University to the amphitheatre junction to the Stadium and from the direction of Dadaşkent to the Athletes’ Village to the University entrance junction are closed to traffic in order to facilitate the transportation. According to the information received, the traffic will be in single line from University junction to Dadaşkent and this route will be used by only VIP vehicles. The public transport vehicles that come from Ilıca or Dadaşkent route will use the former way of the airport.

Erzurum sets an example for Maribor

Killian stated that Erzurum which has been a terrific host for 25th WU can host 2017, 2019 and 2021 Winter Games.

05.02.2011-ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA- Killian called for the Slovenia Maribor team which will host the 2013 Winter Games, and said, “You should be as good as at least Erzurum has been.” With two days left for the closing of the 25th WU which began on 27th of January, President of FISU Board of Management George E. Killian, Member of FISU Board of Management and President of Turkish University Sports Federation Prof. Dr. Kemal Tamer, President of FISU Technical Committee Roger Roth, Member of FISU Supervisory Committee and International Press Commiitee and 2011 General Coordinator Bekir Korkmaz held a press conference. At the press conference held in Palan Hotel, President of FISU Board of Management stated that 25th WU reached to the highest number of participants in the history of Winter Games with a total of 2 thousand 483, one thousand 593 of which are sportspeople from 52 countries and 844 of which are officals. Killian also said that the high number of participants was a result of Erzurum being the host and that the organization was literally perfect thanks to the proper hosting.

Turkey will begin to win medals in the next 10 years

Killian pointed out that he and Kemal Tamer watched the Figure Skating competition in which Turkey won the silver medal and added, “Turkey could not win many medals however from this day forth in the next 10 to 12 years, Turkey will begin to win medals. Winter sports are competitive in nature. If you take a look at the countries competed in Ski Jumping, all of the professional skiers want to be a part of it. I, sincerely, believe that the Athletes’ Village which kept together all of the sportspeople is one of the best villages. It was just great. FISU Supervisory Committee spent most of its time in the village. The foods, sportspeople and the employees were amazing. How can we find the same level of service in the future? I think it is going to be a hard quest. As I stated before, there are two elements which will have a positive effect on the games. These are where you sleep and where you eat. If these two elements are set accordingly then you will be on the right track. What you need for both of them to be accordingly is a good organization and a great leader. Or else what you are left with is only the success you get from the games. My opinion is that we were able to fulfill these in Erzurum. Today, when I woke up I said to myself ‘had I been young and I was a skier or a snowboarder and I was looking for a place to enjoy life, I would definitely go to Erzurum.”

Erzurum can host 2017, 2019 and 2021 Winter Games

Killian stated that there are two cities who are candidates for becoming the capital of winter sports and continued, “we always look to the future. I know where we are going to be in 2013. I would like to see two games of 2017, 2019 and 2021 in Erzurum. Kemal Tamer agrees with me. I mean it when I say we will come to Erzurum again. You did a great job and you have the time to fulfill the same task. If you make a request towards hosting another winter games we will most certainly come back. Poland and Spain hosted the winter games two times each. There is not such a thing that Erzurum cannot host the games one more time.” Killian who said that he had doubts when he first step into Erzurum, stated, “I thought to myself, ‘Will you able to fulfil all your promises?’ and you did. The Government, Student Federation, Sports Federation and the local commitee plays an important role in this. All of these came together and acted as one. You were able to transfer a small city to an international center. I would like to extend my thanks to the police officers. The Chief of Police helped us to have a great time within this organization. More people means trouble. Because in Harbin, China people who attend to the games as spectators can be more in number. One of my favourites of these international organizations was the Basketball World Championship. I was in İstanbul and in one of the days when there was not a game scheduled, my wife and my daughter wanted to go out for shopping and I wanted to stay in and relax. I sat in my room which had a view of the Bosphorus and watched the boats passing by. In Erzurum, I sit in my room and look at the snow covered mountains and think to myself what a wonderful place to spend your holiday. I believe it is time to thank each one of you. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the citizens of Turkey. You have been so kind to us and you made this organization possible. Our students will speak of Erzurum to people who have never heard of it. I hope the press is pleased also because the efforts of the press is really important. You have transfered every news with honesty and you were very precise. You did not try to create a false image of anything. You have been good and kind to us.”

COMBAT WITH THE NATURE
Member of FISU Board of Management and the President of Turkish University Sports Federation Prof. Dr. Kemal Tamer stated that they feel honoured to contribute Erzurum to be the host country of 25th WU and added “ Firstly, I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who contributed to this organization. Winter sports are different than summer sports. We. not only hold organization, but also struggle with the nature. Natural conditions make our job more difficult. I witnessed the efforts in Erzurum about the games. People started to work before the sunrise and they did not stop until the sunset. It looks like easy, but when you join them to work, you understand its difficulty. I would like to extend my appreciations to FISU President George E. Killian and the member of FISU Board of Management for their designation of Erzurum as the host city. Before the start of the games, they had some worries about the organization and they were right to fear because neither Erzurum nor Turkey was ready to be a host for such an important organization. The venues are started from the scratch. Of course, if you start something from scratch it costs a lot of money and effort. Yet, we succeeded it. The games will end tomorrow. Everybody is tired but we will enjoy this success later. We are happy that the games will end smoothly.” Deputy of FISU Supervisor Commitee and member of International Press Commity Leonz Eder stated “As Deputy of FISU Supervisor Commitee, we worked hand in hand with the organization committee. We had many meetings and we were in communication with each other. We discussed the problem in our meetings. We solved transportation, accomodation, security problems. Now, we visit the future’s host countries. Now Erzurum is a good sources of information center from them thus they want to have a rough idea about the procedure.
President of FISU Technical Commitee Roger Roth highlighted “ I was worried about the success of Erzurum. Yet, then everything ran smoothly. I tried to be press observor and I realised that they are amazing photographs. The games relived both us and Erzurum.”
2011 General Coordinator Bekir Korkmaz who stated that Turkey did a good job in winter games stressted that closing ceremony of the 25th WU will be as outstanding as the opening ceremony. Korkmaz also underlined that the parades of the sportsmen will be at the same time and added, “after the parade, the dance team will take the stage and famous singer Kıraç will perform in the closing ceremony.”
Killian who referred the public attention as the most important part of the organization added: “The rinks were full of people. Some of the spectators even could not find an empty seat. I was surprised that mothers came to curling and ice hockey competitions with their children. I could not believe my eyes. I was sitting in front of them and the child said ‘Push me’ to her/his mother. I think he/she did not know the rules of ice hockey but it was clear that he/she liked ice hockey. Normally we do not register the number of participants but we will start to record in order to understand which branch of sports attract how many spectators. I had 500 small brooches when I came to Erzurum and I presented them to children as a souvenir. A 9 years old child with whom I talked stated that he will be a skier and I said to himr ‘my colleagues will watch your performance when you will be a student in the university. When you meet with them you will say that you are from Erzuurm.’“ Killian who addressed the Team of Maribor where 27th WU will be held in 2013 added “ Of course, your organization will be successful, too. Yet you should use Erzurum as a starting point. “

Nice time at the reception
After the meeting that was held by FISU, the reception in which President of 2011 ERZURUM General Coordinatorship Commitee, directors and the officials attended was organized. President of FISU Advisory Commitee, Kairis Ulp stated that the organizations runs smoothly. Ulp,, who extended her thanks to everyone who contributed to the organization added “ No doubt, Bekir Korkmaz is the one who lead the organization. I would like extend my appreciations to Bekir Kormaz and his team on behalf of FISU.”

Canadian family adored Turkish hospitality

The visitors who came to Erzurum within the framework of Erzurum Hospitality Project are very happy.

05.02.2011-ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA- Approximately 100 families that came to Erzurum for the 25th WU were hosted by the citizens of Erzurum within the framework of “Hospitable Erzurum” Project. Alan Boras, Jilaine Borras and Rebecca Borras who came to Erzurum in order to watch their children’s performances, were hosted by a family from Erzurum. Canadian family stated that they are impressed by the Turkish hospitality. 100 families applied to Erzurum Hospitality Project that was organized by the 2011 General Coordinatorship in order to prevent the accomodtion problems of the families that came Turkey for the 25th WU. The foreign families that stay with Turkish families had a chance to learn Turkish Culture. Canadian Jilaine Boras, Alan Boras and Rebecca Nadler who were hosted by Nihat Seyhun Ali, research assistant at Atatürk University Faculty of Law, stated that they will never forget the 10 days with the Turkish family. Alan Boras expressed that they had a chance to see Turkish hospitality added “We spent our time to visit historical and cultural places of Erzurum to know Turkish Culture well. People are closely interested in us and they always show honour to us. Our host Nihat deals with our problems. In Erzurum we had a chance to taste Turkish famous black tea. I start to brew tea at home.” Nihat Seyhun Ali expressed his happiness to host the tourists in his own house and added “ they did not mind when I explained the values that are peculiar to us. They are really friendly. I realised that Canadian people and Turkish people are close to each other.”

Alena Prochazkova reached for gold

Slovakian skier Alena Prochazkova won the gold medal in Women’s Freestyle Cross Country 15 km.

- On the 10th day of the 25th WU Women’s Freestyle Cross Country 15 km Competition ended. Alena Prochazkova took the first rank with 43:33.2 minutes while Russian skier Alia Iksanova became second with 43:34.1 minutes and Kateryna Grygorenko from Ukraina with 42:42.0 minutes. Turkish skier Rojbin Oren could not compete in the competition because of her sickness while the only Turkish skier in the competition Büşra Güneş became 28th with 54:31.6 minutes.

Gold medal goes to Artem Pryma

Ukrainian biathlet Artem Pryma reached fort he gold in Men’s Biathlon Mass Start 15 km.

- On the 10th day of the 25th WU, Biathlon competitions will end completely in Kandilli. In Men’s Biathlon Mass Start 15 km Artem Pryma from Ukrania won the gold medal with 41:22.2 minutes, while Bulgarian biathlete Krasimir Anev got silver with 41:31.2 minutes and Russian Alexey Trusoy got bronze with 41:31.4 minutes. 30 biathletes competed in Men’s Biathlon Mass Start 15 km. Turkish athletes Ahmet Üstüntaş and Orhan Gazi Cıvıl became 24th and 29th, respectively. Also, Russian biathlet Stanislav Bazeev could not complete the competition.

High Level of Venues

Head of Slovenian Delegation praised Erzurum.

- Head of Slovenian Delegation Tone Vogrinec whose country will host WU in 2013 evaluated the 25th WU and stated: “It is impossible to follow Turkey. I have many experiences in winter sports but your organization and venues are better than ours.”

Government support is amazing

Tone Vogrinec stated that Erzurum is better than Slovenia in terms of its population and venuen, and continued: “ The goverment supports Erzurum amazingly. We cannot get the same level in terms of the venues. Our goverment support is not as huge as yours. “ Vogrinec expressed that he loved Türk Telekom Jumping Towers and Erzurum Stadium most and added: “The venues are at the city center. Especially, the jumping towers are outstanding. In Maribor, the jumping towers are 1 hour away from the city center.” Vogirnes stressed that Erzurum took an huge step by organizing 25th WU and continued: “ Organizing olympics is a difficult process. All of the candidate countries are very competitive. Erzurum can host olympics, theorically. Winter Games will provide an important experience to Turkey.”

SECURITY IS AT MAXIMUM LEVEL

In the 25th WU 2100 policemen work 24 hours a day.

04.02.2011-ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA- In the 25th WU, security measures are at the maximum level. 2100 policemen provide the security of sportsmen, members of delagations, citizens of Erzurum and the tourists. 2011 Winter Games Security Committe organized in 2008 for the 2th WU works under the auspieces of Deputy Governor Mehmet Gök.

AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY

The committe consists of public instutions responsible from security services, follows the local and foreing groups that are under the risk and do detailed plans. Erzurum Security Directorate Head of Personal Division and member of Security Committee Mehmet Erdem stated that the security measures are at the maximum level in the 25th WU. Erdem stressed that there are motor patrol officiers and foot patrol officiers 24 hours a day in many parts of the city, added: “ Our policemen work every parts of the city. All precautions are taken in order to prevent any kind of security problem. The security measures are at maximum level.” Erdem expressed that the policemen know foreign language help to the members of delegations, sportsmen and tourists continued: “The personnel who know foreign language work in police stations, the venues and especially in 155 Police Emergency. Also, 35 high level personnel among 500 policemen came from different cities are responsible of the communciation of the foreigns.”

First medal on ice

Turkish National skaters Alper Uçar and Alisa Agafonova won the silver medal in Ice Dance Free Dance, bringing Turkey its first medal in the 25th WU.

Figure Skating Competitions that were held in Turkish Airlines Ice Rink continued with the Ice Dance Free Dance Competitions. President of Youth and Sports Affairs Yunus Akgül, the autorities from Youth and Sports General Directorate, President of Ice Skating Federation Fahrettin Kandemir, President of University Sports Federation Kemal Tamer and presidents of other federations watched the competition.

In the end of the competition Russian pair Kristina Gorshkova and Vitali Butikov got 81.23 points including 38.20 technical and 43.03 artistic points. The pair whose point was 54.30 in the short programme got 135.53 points in total and won the gold medal.

Turkish skaters Alper Uçar and Alisa Agafonova got 77.55 points including 39.86 technical and 37.69 artistic points. The pair whose point was 49.38 in the short programme got 127.13 points in total and got the gold while Ukrainian pair Nadezhda Frolenkova and Mikhail Kasalo got 121.96 points in total and won the bronze.

Alisa Agafonova and Alper Uçar who performed their ice dance in their black velvet clothes that with shining stones on it, received great applause from the spectators from the very first moment they were seen on the rink. The spectators who cheered the skaters up, applaused Uçar and Agafonova with Turkish flags when the their performance ended. When the points of Turkish pair apperaed on the scoreboard before they were announced, Turkish spectators’ cheers shook the rink and there was a rush of emotions.

– On the 8th day of the 25th Wu, Women’s Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom Second Run is completed.

Jennifee Vanwagner from USA took the frist rank with 1:53.26 seconds while Italian skier Lucia Mazotti became second with plus 0.29 minutes and Polish Karolina Charpek became third with plus 0.47 minutes.

In the competition in which 70 skiers competed, Turkish skiers Tuğba Daşdemir, Betül Gül, Fatme Nurgül and İrem Önder became 52th, 57th,71th and 72th respectively.

- On the 8th day of the 25th WU in Men’s Snowboard Half Pipe eliminations are completed and the Far East countries put their seals on the eliminations that were held in Palandöken. The snowboarders who took place in top six have a right to compete in the final competitions. In the competition Japan Ryo Aono took the first place while his compatriot Kazuumi Fujita became second, South Korean Ho-jun Kim became third,Chinese snowboarder Wancheng Shi became fourth and his compatriot Yiwei Zhang became fifth and South Korean snowboarder Trai Hwan An became 6th. Turkish snowboarders Deniz Altınok, Can Polatkan and Mehmet Ali Ünal became 28th,31th and 33th respectively. The finals competition will be held on Friday.

Golden Skiers of Slovakia

In Cross Country Mixed Team Sprint Finals, Slovakia reached for gold medal.

– Peter Mlynar and Alena Prochazkova, who competed on behalf of Slovakia, won the gold medal with 14:55:8. French skiers Babtiste Gros and Marion Buillet got the silver with 15:00:7. Ukrainian skiers Ivan Bilosyuk and Kateryna Grygorenko won the bronze with 15:08:1.

At the finish line, Slovakian skier Peter Mlynar said that he competed very well on behalf of his teammate and himself and that he is very happy with the result. Mlynar also stated that this is the first gold medal in his career and that everything about the organization is running smoothly. Mlynar pointed out that Erzurum is a finer place and the track is far more modern than the last place he had to go for the competitions. Alena Prochazkova said that this is her 3rd gold medal and she is very happy to be in Erzurum.

The finals competition was carried out after two semi finals and neither of the Turkish teams were able to advance to the finals as in Mixed Team Sprint Semi Final 1, Turkish skiers Erkan Orhan and Büşra Güneş had an accident. During the exchange of flag Büşra stumbled on Orhan’s foot caused the breaking of one of Orhan’s poles and he had to continue the competition with only one pole. In Mixed Team Sprint Semi Final 2, Turkish skiers Ömer Yusufoğlu and Rojbin Ören became 12th and could not advance to the finals.

– On the 7th day of the 25th WU Turkish Women’s Ice Hockey team competed against Canada in Cemal Gürsel Sports Complex with tha capacity of 3 thousand spectators.

The competition ended with the lopsided victory of Canada over Turkey by 11-0. Turkey will compete against UK on 5th of February on which the gold medal will find its owner in Women’s Ice Hockey.

The snowboarders who will compete in Women’s Snowboard Half Pipe Finals are determined.

– On the 8th day of the 25th WU, Women’s Snowboard Half Pipe Elimimations are completed. The elimination competition that was held at Palandöken Ski Center ended with the victory of Chienese snowboarder Shunang Li while Polish Paulina Ligocka Andrzejewska became second and Mirabelle Thovex from France became third. In the competition in which 23 snowboarders from 9 countries competed 3 snowboarders from 3 different countries gained the right to compete in final while 6 snowboarders from 4 different countries advanced to the semifinal. The finals competition will be held on 4th of February.

Aida Rybalko and Aliona Sosunova of Lithuania took the podium wearing Turkish traditional outfits.

- The sportslovers who follow matches during the day, attend to the artistic and cultural activities that are organized by the Erzurum 2011 OC. Metropolitan Municipality Cultural Center hosted Anatolian Culture and Traditional Outfits Fashion Show.

60 pairs of clothes that were designed by Cemile Gül were presented by the 15 models. Folk dances of Erzurum, Trabzon and Adıyaman were performed in the programme.

The most colorful scene of the day was the Lithuanian Aida Rybalko and Aliona Sosunova’s fashion show with Turkish models.

The athletes who sparked great interest knocked spots off to the professional models. Aliona Sosunow who is in the Liuthanian Women’s Biathlon Team and Aida Rybalko who is in the Women’s Figure Skating Free Dance Team presented the collection of Cemile Gül.

After the fashion show the two Lithuaniang girls received great applause from the audiences and they had a souvenir photo taken. Both of the athletes stated that the fashion show was amazing and that, they are very happy to be in Erzurum.

- Estonian skier Ivar Kruusenberger who competed in men’s snowboard expressed his love of Erzurum and Turkish people. Kruusenberger also admitted that he liked very much the Atatürk University, which is the biggest university that he has seen so far. Kruusenberger added; “I wish I would study in here. I hope, I shall come to Erzurum via Erasmus Programme." Kussenberger who said that he loves Turkish tea also identifitied Turks’ warmth with Turkish tea. 26 years old skier who is a Ph.D student in chemistry said, “I experiment with oxygen in chemistry. Studying in Turkey especially in Erzurum would be an advantage for me. I hope I can revisit Turkey soon.”

In Men’s Ice Hockey two teams which advanced to the semi finals were determined.

– On the 8th of the 25th WU, Kazakhstan and Canada advanced to the semi finals.

At the Cemal Gürsel Sports Complex, Kazakhstan Men’s Ice Hockey team managed to overcome its rival, Japan, with the score of 5-1 and became the first team to advace to the semi finals. At the 500 Capacity Rink, Canada outscored its opponent, Slovakia, by 9-1 and became the second team to advance to the semi finals.

Gold medal goes to Ukraine in biathlon.

Ukrainian biathlon player Artem Pryma won the gold medal in men’s biathlon sprint 10 km.

– On the 6th day of the 25 th WU, men’s biathlon sprint 10 km ended with the victory of Ukraine while Turkish athlete Orhan Gazi Cıvıl took the 31th rank and his compatriots Uğur Akman, Müjdat Boz, Recep Efe and Ekrem Yıldırım became 33th, 37th, 38th and 42th, respectively.

Only 48 of the 51 athletes were able to see the finish. Ukrainian Artem Pryma won the gold medal with 28:25,3 and his compatriot Sergeii Semenov won the silver with 28:31,7 while Evgeniy Garanichev of Romania got the bronze with 28:38,9. At the end of the competition President of Turkish University Sports Federation Prof. Dr. Kemal Tamer gave bouquets of flowers to the medalists at the congratulations ceremony. The medal ceremony will be held at the Double Minaret Madrasah.

Main Press Center Health Center Manager Dr.Oğuzhan Polat stated that they provide health service to the press members 24 hours a day. Polat expresses that they work with 20 teams from 3 different cities that work in two shifts in the health center whic has a well equipped ambulance. Dr. Polat also gave advise to the press members who work in an intensive tempo; "People who work in front of computers should take 5 minutes of breaks in every 30 minutes. They should not forget to do exercises which include stretching arms and shoulders.

Russian skaters outdistanced their rivals in figure skating.

- In the Pairs' Figure Skating Russian couple took the first rank with 54.30 points while Turkish couple Alisa Agafonova and Alper Uçar became 4th with 49.58 points.
On the 6th day of the 25th WU, 30 skaters from 10 different countries competed in Pairs’ Figure Skating short programme competition that was held in the 2,000-capacity rink.

Skier Talliy Monastyev who came to Erzurum to watch WU had a fatal heart attack.

- President of Health Commitee Serhat Vançelik made a statement about the 72-year old Talliy Monastyev. Vançelik held a press conference with FISU Deputy of Health Commitee Dusan Hamar and FISU Russian delagate Oleg Matytsin.

Monastyev was a former skier and was a guest of the of FISU. Health officials said he previously had an open heart surgery.

Oleg Matytsin of the Russian delegation expressed his sorrow and sent his condolences to all Universiade family and the relatives of the deceased.

Various other officials, including WU 2011 General Coordinator Bekir Korkmas expressed their condolences.

Turkish skater Alper Uçar and Aliza Agafonova who have been training for one and half years set their eyes on top five.

- Turkey’s first figure skater Alper Uçar will get on the rink with his partner Aliza Agafonova on Tuesday. The couple trained for the games for five months with trainer Natalia Duova and her assistant Oleg Voyko. The couple which will compete in both short programme and long programme is going to try to be in top five among 15 couples. Turkish National skater Alper Uçan who talks assertively for top five expressed his happiness and excitement to be in Erzurum and said “Figure skating tickets are black market items and this is an honour for us. I believe that we will be successful thanks to the support of Turkish spectators.”

Alper Uçar who became champion both in Turkey and Balkans in ice skating before he started his figure skating career expressed that couples need 5 years to warm towards each others and added “We are a couple for one and half year. Our trainer thought that we took huge steps in such a short time. We had a successful training period. Our rivals and us know each other and they are afraid of us. Our rivals are more experienced. Yet, I believe that we will be successful in the games thanks to the support of citizens of Erzurum. We are ready for the games for physically and mentally.

Natalia Dubova who was a famous skater and trained three champions in Olympics during her career as a trainer is hopeful for the Turkish couple. Dubova who stressed that the skaters who compete in couples need 5 years to get to know each other, stated “In the past both Aliza and Alper got successful rankings. We started from scratch. Alper and Aliza are successful skaters. They got a harmony in a short period. I belive that they will be successful.” Russian trainer who highlighted the difficulties of harmonizing Alper and Aliza added “We always needed time to harmonize Turkish and Ukranian mentality. It is possible to find both new and the historical world together.” Baene who worked as a volunteer in 2004 Athens summer and 2006 Torino winter Olympics said that Erzurum 2011 is the first organization in which he participates as a sportsman. Beana stressed that he found the EWU 2011 Erzurum well organized and added, “not only transportation and accomadition but also rinks and venues are advanced. ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA- Sebahhatin Oglago who got Turkey’s best ranking in 25th WU on Saturday became 14th in men’s cross country 15 km. On the 5th day of the 25th WU that started on the 27th of January Oglago, became 14th in the men’s cross country 15 km, which features 7.5 freestyle and 7.5 classic, with 2:09.9.

Sebahattin Oglago who stated that his 6th ranking in the mass start was a disadvantage for him, added that he is still satisfied with his final position. Oglago said, “I did my best. I believe that I will get better results in the future.”

Children who made the snow sculpture of the Jumping Towers stated that their biggest dream is to jump from the jumping towers....

A group of young students in Erzurum, made snow sculptures of the Madrassa with Twin Minarets and the Jumping Towers which are the old and new symbols of the city. Students who placed the flags of Turkey and Universiade on the sculptures, finished the sculptures after a day of hard work. Nuh Nar, Mustafa Nar, Burak Özdemir, Fatih Canver and Yasin Emre Öz stated that their biggest dream is to jump from the jumping towers.

Nuh Nar stated that they worked on the sculptures by taking turns because of the cold weather. Nar also said that they follow the winter games from TV and added, “We try to watch the indoor and outdoor competitions if we have the chance. Even though we did not previously know much about winter sports, now we want to be a part of these sports. We are especially very curious about ski jumping.”

The visual feast never ends for the spectators at the 25th WU. As much as they enjoy the great show in the day at the events, they are able to enjoy the traditional folk dances during the medal ceremonies.
The folk dances, organized by Erzurum 2011 General Coordination Office Culture and Arts Committee, and performed with the historical Madrasa with Twin Minarets at the background, create a magical atmosphere in the city.
The folk dancers perform dances from many regions of Turkey or what has formerly been Turkey, including Caucasus, Erzurum, and Artvin. Speaking about the shows, Head of Culture and Arts Committee Mustafa Küçüköner said, "We are organizing a very important event in Erzurum. The culture and arts activities must be fit for such a big organization. We will keep on performing with our folk dances team, who are themselves all medalists in folk dances competitions in various dance organizations."

Men's Ski Jumping K95 was finalized at the 25th WU. Slovenian jumper Markej Dobovsek collected 269 points and got the gold medal, while Polish Maciej Kot became second with 254.9 points and Ziga Mandl from Slovenia got bronze with 254.5 Points.

South Korea crowned its success with golds in Men’s and Women’s Short Track Speed Skating 1000 meters.

The medals found their owners in Men’s and Women’s Short Track Speed Skating. South Korean skaters got golden medals both in Men’s and Women’s competitions.

At the end of the Men’s competition, South Korean Kima Tae Hoo took the first rank while Chinese skaters Sui Uaoku and Korean skater Kim Seoung won silver and gold.

-Aguri Shimizu from Japan took the first rank with 103.0 meters and 250 points in men’s sky jumping competition while Polish Tomasz Pochwala became second with 100.5 meters and 239 points and Swiss Tommy Schmid became third with 99.5 meters and 237.5 points. Turkish jumper Mustafa Öztaşyana was 26th with 74.5 meters.

Speaking after the competition, Polish Pochwala stated that he is pleased to take the second rank and added his next aim is to become first in 2014 Winter Olympics. Pochwala also said that he found the 25th WU successful.

Young Athletes attracted to Ski Jumping

Mustafa Öztaşyana, 18 year old national athlete, performed the first of the official trial jumps at the towers.

Turkish athletes participated in the ongoing official trial jumps at the Turk Telekom Jumping Towers. On the third day of the 25th WU, national athlete Mustafa Öztaşyana performed the first of the official trial jumps.

Öztaşyana stressed that he has been a part of this discipline since he was 14 years old and added that he had been an Alpine skier until he showed potential in ski jumping 4 years ago.

Authorisation by the Ski Federation

Öztaşyana who stated that he would perform his jump with the special authorisation from the Turkish Ski Federation, said “My greatest advice to ski jumping athlete candidates is that they should show willingness and never give up, because it is a sport worth of being a part of.”

Mustafa’s father Hasan Öztaşyana, said “I am proud of my son and I support him. I believe he will represent his country in the best way possible. We are aware of the possible dangers of the sport, however we would not to throw cold water on him. Thanks to these venues, now Mustafa can train in Erzurum and will not have to go far away from his home. This is a pleasing news for us.”

Erzurum breaks a new record as the 25th Winter Universiade continues. Erzurum which had broken a record in Universiade with the highest number of participant countries with 58 at the opening ceremony, broke an another record with highest number of spectators. Despite the snowy and cold weather, 10 thousand spectators watched the ski jumping finals. Experts say that rinks and snow fields are also packed with spectators.

29.01.2011-ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA – The most exciting game of Saturday in Men’s Ice Hockey Competition was the last match of the day.
Canada – Belarus game was full of action with players sometimes running into each other, and in the process, receiving occasional penalties.
The game was taken into overtime with Belarus scoring the equalizer less than just a minute before the end of 3rd period.
The 5-minute overtime did not see a shift in the balanced score and the game went into penalty shots, where the end result was 3-2 for Belarus.
Friendship, the main goal of WU, was fostered once again at the end of the game, when players of both sides congratulated each other, warmly shaking each other’s hands.

Kairis Ulp, Vice-Chair of the FISU International Technical Committee for the Winter Universiade, made evaluations about 25th WU. Ulp, who has been charming everyone around with her smiling face and sympathetic attitudes, said she found the opening ceremony very “strong”. Ulp stated that “The opening ceremony and the efforts were amazing. I am fascinated. I was happy to see stadium full. I want you to use the word “strong” because it is the only word that can explain the opening ceremony.”

FISU Supervision Commitee Chair Kairis Ulp expressed that she watched many opening ceremonies and added , “But I have never seen the like of it.” Ulp stressed that the performance warmed up everbody in the stadium in spite of snowing and cold weather stated “ Opening ceremonies are usually short in the winter games and long in the summer games. However, it was like a summer games’ opening ceremony that of its duration and warmth.”

Ulp stated that there were indeed some small mishaps in the organization but noted that this is very natural. Ulp said “Just like every international organization, there are some small problems here. Those who take part in the organization work a lot. Occurrence of small mishaps is quite normal. Let's not forget the fact that it is the first time that you are organizing a winter games.”

Ulp also stated that after the WU, Erzurum can host other international organizations and added “Federations should try to organize international organizations in winter sports. I believe with all my heart that Erzurum can establish new venues and reach the level of organizing winter olympics. But as I mentioned, before winter olympics, the city must first organize various other international competitions in winter sports. We will support Erzurum till the end.”

Winter Universiade Games kick off in Turkey

The delegations from 58 countries took their places in the stadium.

The 25th Winter Universiade Games was inaugurated by Turkish President Abdullah Gul in eastern province of Erzurum on Thursday.

Gul said that he was glad that Erzurum was hosting such an important organization and it was a great success for Turkey.

The ceremony began with eight athletes and the games' mascot "Kanka" carrying the flag of the Universiade behind the band. Turkey's national anthem was played by the band.

The delegations from 58 countries took their places in the stadium.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 25th Winter Universiade Games, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that Erzurum deserved to host the winter olympics in the future.

"More than 3,000 athletes from over 50 countries have arrived in Erzurum for the Winter Universiade. These athletes are not guests. They are the hosts and I welcome them to Erzurum," Erdogan said.

"Erzurum is a unique province. I advise all the athletes to visit cites in Erzurum and get to know the province closely," Erdogan said.
"These games have five stars. The five stars represent the five continents. There is peace, brotherhood, love, happiness and excitement here. I believe that we can host the winter olympics following the Universiade Games,"Erdogan said.

In his closing remarks, Erdogan wished all the athletes success during the Universiade Games.

Turkish athlete Sabahattin Oglago, who will compete in the men's cross-country skiing, carried the Turkish flag in the ceremony.

Delivering the opening remarks at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Organization Committee and State Minister in charge of sports Faruk Nafiz Ozak said that everyone witnessed a story of success in Erzurum on Thursday.

Young people from five continents came together in Erzurum with a joy and happiness, Ozak said.

I wish all the students success in the competitions, Ozak added.

Following the remarks of Turkish President Abdullah Gul that officially signaled the beginning of the games, eight athletes brought the flag of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to the stadium and FISU's anthem was sung.

Meanwhile, the olympic torch was carried by Turkish national athletes Kenan Sofuoglu, Selcuk Cebi, Neslihan Darnel and Gizem Girismen.
Turkish dance group, Anadolu Atesi (Fire of Anatolia), began a show as part of the opening ceremony.

There is heavy snowfall in Erzurum on Thursday night.
The games will host nearly 3,000 sportsmen from 58 countries who will compete in a total of 11 branches; Alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, curling, ski jumping, cross country, Nordic combined, snowboard, freestyle skiing, figure skating and short track.
Turkey will participate in the games with 152 athletes.

Officials said that the facilities built for Universiade 2011 constituted the biggest sports investment Turkey had made for a single sports event up until today, stating that construction of the venues had cost nearly 600 million Turkish liras (TL).
Erzurum 2011 Winter Universiade Games will end on February 6.
The next Universiade Games will take place in Maribor city of Slovenia in 2013.

Turkish and Greek PMs jointly inaugurated Universiade sports complex in Erzurum that will host 25th World University Winter Games.

Erdogan said that Erzurum would take place in Turkey's sports history with the 25th World University Winter Games (2011 Universiade).

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou met with Erdogan in the eastern province of Erzurum which will host the 2011 Winter Universiade to begin later this month.

The two leaders had a breakfast in the morning and then attended a ceremony to inaugurate Universiade sports complex in the city, ahead of their speeches to Turkish ambassadors around the world who met in Erzurum for their annual gathering.

Erzurum on verge of historic change ahead of Universiade

Preparations have been finalized and athletes are training hard for the upcoming Winter Universiade. Thanks to the games, Erzurum has received the largest amount of investment in the Turkish Republic’s history. More than $500 million has been spent on facilities for the event.
The year is 2004. Turkish National Olympic Committee (TMOK) President Togay Bayatlı grabs his phone. The person he calls is then Youth and Sports General Director Mehmet Atalay.

He gets directly to the point and says, “General director, I hear Erzurum is submitting a bid to host the Winter Universiade (WU). Do you know about that?” Calmly, Atalay responds, “Yes.” Bayatlı’s surprise increases even more: “There is neither a facility nor a hotel in Erzurum! How is this going to happen?”

“Mr. Bayatlı, don’t you worry about that. The will that made Erzurum a serious candidate can make the facilities too,” Atalay says.
Yes, and today that very same will has now successfully completed the construction of all facilities with a month to spare before the start of the games.
The desire to host the WU was ignited in December 2003. Atalay was attending a meeting with youth and sports provincial directors in Erzurum. But the city had been hit hard that winter with heavy snowfall. Their plane had to land in Erzincan. On his way, an idea occurred to Atalay: At a time when Turkey is eager to host international events, why shouldn’t Erzurum aim to host a large winter event? He discussed his idea with then Sports Minister Mehmet Ali Şahin, who gave his full support. On the evening of the same day, Provincial Director of Youth and Sports Fatih Çintimar announced during a TV show, “We will make the snow of the Erzurum profitable,” and so started the avalanche.
Erzurum initially submitted a bid to host the 2009 WU games. But in the absence of facilities, Harbin of China had the winning bid.
So the sleeves were rolled up for 2011. This time, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stepped up too. He met twice with International University Sports Federation (FISU) President George Killian and he personally called the prime ministers of the 16 FISU member states. Then Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül hosted a dinner for all FISU board members. And the competition with the Slovenian city of Maribor to host the 2011 WU started in earnest. Erzurum only had mock-up models of the facilities while Maribor already had the infrastructure to hold the events. The Turkish delegation arrived in Torino, where the bid winner would be determined by voting, armed with 7,000 signatures. Erdoğan promised that Turkey would complete all infrastructure works on time. The effectiveness of the presentation by the Turkish delegation and the prime minister’s words had an impact on the FISU members and the 2011 WU was granted to the 6,000-year-old city of Erzurum.
Any question of Erzurum’s ability to host the event has long gone. Now, Erzurum has the infrastructure with the potential to host a future Winter Olympics. Brand new facilities have been constructed in the mountains and in the city. A ski jump tower located near the city center now competes with the 13th century Çifte Minare Medrese as a symbol of the city.

Thanks to the games, Erzurum has received the largest amount of investment in the history of the Turkish Republic. More than $500 million has been spent on facilities in preparations for the event.
Next month in this city, Turkey will be hosting sporting events in some fields that are unfamiliar to most Turks. As part of the 2011 WU, there will be competitions such as alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, curling, ski jumping, cross country, Nordic combined, snowboarding, freestyle skiing, figure skating and short track speed skating. Turkey is more experienced in hosting sporting events like volleyball, basketball, athletics and football. But until now, Turks neither had the experience nor proper facilities for winter sports. For example, we only recently heard about curling for the first time. There are only a few athletes in this sport and a curling national team has been formed for the first time. Official sources indicated there were no registered athletes in this field in Turkey.

Will the change really take place?

Even in the beginning, we can see that many changes occurring in Erzurum. So what do city officials think about this change? What will these facilities bring to the city? Will the largest investment in Turkey’s history be in vain?
When Turkey won the bid to host the MotoGP in 2007, officials claimed it would generate $20 million every year. Millions were spent on a Formula 1 circuit that now hosts only one event a year. Also, the 2005 Summer Universiade did not bring much in terms of returns for host city İzmir.
A real change will happen in Erzurum after Feb. 6, when the WU ends, says Erzurum Gov. Sebahattin Öztürk. He believes the city is on the verge of a historic change and the new facilities are important for Erzurum.
“On Feb. 6, we will have our facilities fully operational and beautiful visual images to show off in future bids. Until now, we could only show mock-ups. We will be going to every tourism fair, sports fair and ski fair armed with real data. We will proudly invite people to Erzurum,” he continued.
Erzurum Mayor Ahmet Küçükler sees 2011 as a milestone for the city. Erzurum will be put on the map after 2011. “For years, the snow had been a source of difficulty for us. But after 2011 it will not be a curse but a blessing,” he says.
Küçükler also adds that investments will change in Erzurum and the municipality must keep up with this change.
2011 Erzurum Winter Universiade General Coordinator Bekir Korkmaz has a more cautious approach, saying whether or not Erzurum maximizes this opportunity and the new facilities to their fullest potential will depend on the administration of the city after the games.
“The vision of local administrators is very important. The government has given its maximum support. Erzurum must undergo a transformation that takes the city’s potential for winter tourism and winter sports into consideration. Erzurum has a very big chance to get over its ill fate. If we don’t realize this and we see the event as only an 11-day event, then both Erzurum and Turkey will lose out,” he explained.

Shortage of athletes
What about the athletes who will use these facilities? Turkey is already a poor country when it comes to winter sports athletes. For example, there are only 207 registered athletes in ice hockey, while only 142 female and 89 male athletes are ice skaters. A total of 754 athletes, including 188 women, are registered skiers. In Erzurum, there are 7,103 professional sportspeople, with the exception of football.

Çintimar is one of the most hardworking people who have been involved in games preparations since the endeavor was first initiated.
“I am sure that none of us who have been involved in the [2011 WU] preparations have slept more than five hours a night since 2007,” he says.
Çintimar explains that much has changed in Erzurum. “Before we became a candidate in 2004, people would pray for the snow to stop. In 2007, they started praying for more snow,” he says.
“Sports halls are open 12 hours a day. Go to the ice skating rink and you cannot find room to skate. I will not be humble. Currently we have 25,000 registered athletes. Ninety nine percent of our speed skating team is from Erzurum. Almost half of our ice hockey team is from Erzurum. Before there were only one or two ice hockey teams, but the figure has risen to 20 now. Ten speed skating teams have been established in Erzurum in two years and we have five ski jump teams,” he explains.

He adds that they aim to make 25 percent of Erzurum’s population registered athletes.
Çintimar adds that Erzurum will also host the 2012 Nordic Skiing Youth World Championship.
All in all, it seems that the Erzurum facilities will not be idle as some circles seem to think.
Tickets go on sale
Tickets for the 2011 Winter Universiade went on sale on Jan. 1 by internet sales and at the booths of the various Erzurum facilities. Tickets for the opening ceremony are priced at TL 20 and TL 10 for closing ceremony. Spectators can purchase tickets for events such as figure skating, ice hockey, curling, ski jumping and short track speed skating for TL 5. Tickets for snowboarding, freestyle skiing, Nordic combined and biathlon cross country can be purchased in exchange of TL 3. No discounts are applied for students or disabled.

Locals hopeful about city’s future
The university winter games are perceived as a good opportunity by the city’s locals. Craftsmen and merchants in Taşhan, a complex that was built 450 years ago, specializes in stores that sell Oltu stones -- one of the best examples of semi-precious stones in the world -- are positive. İbrahim Kasal, who has been trading in Oltu stones for 25 years, was thrilled when he found out that Erzurum would be hosting the international event, thinking that this will help his business. “It’s not only about the nine days -- we are now seeing the facilities that will generate profits for our city throughout our lives.”
His friend interrupts him, saying: “I saw on TV that a former Beşiktaş player [İlhan Mansız] went to Germany to ski. He was getting skating lessons. What is the need for it? He can come to Erzurum. Now we have the facilities. Ours are even better.”
Mehmet Ergün, a jeweler, said that he sees a good future for the city, “God turned the mountains into honey for us.” What about other Erzurum locals? How much are they aware of the investment made in their city?
“We may not have informed locals sufficiently. Or they haven’t sought out the information from us. But we expect their support in this,” Öztürk says, adding: “They have been open to this. They have prepared themselves for winter tourism. Ours was not a city for tourism -- there was a time when there were only soldiers and students. But now, tourists will visit the city.”
An important amount of responsibility falls on the municipality. Küçükler is well aware of this. “We have two jobs as the municipality: Restructuring the city and engaging the public for this event. We have held special campaigns to the raise public awareness of the locals. We have had their houses painted. We offered language courses for store owners so they can speak with foreign visitors. We also provided [language] classes for the drivers of mass public transport,” he explains.

Korkmaz adds that they feel they have not had an adequate opportunity to fully explain the event to locals because they have focused much of their energy on the construction of the facilities.
In the meantime, a total of 58 countries have applied to attend the WU. This figure is a first in the history of the FISU. About 3,000 athletes are expected to come to Erzurum and approximately 3,000 volunteers will be working during the events.

Investment exceeds $500 mln
As a result of the WU, Erzurum has received the largest amount of investment from the government since the foundation of the Turkish Republic. More than $500 million has been invested in the city. In a two-year period, two ski jumping towers as well as an ice skating rink with 2,000-seat capacity, two ice hockey rinks with one 3,000-seat capacity and the other 500-seat capacity, an ice rink with 500-seat capacity and a curling rink with 1,000-seat capacity were constructed. In the town of Konaklı, 17 kilometers from the city center, other facilities have been built to meet the needs of the athletes. The facilities in Palandöken Mountain have been revised. Near Palandöken, three new chairlifts, artificial snow systems and snow parks have also been built. A games village has been constructed to accommodate 3,000 athletes. The city’s Cemal Gürsel Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place, has been renovated. Erzurum’s only airport has been upgraded and expanded to cater for international flights.

22.12.2010-ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA-AIPS members inspecting Konaklı and Kandilli facilities second day of their visit later watched the javelin show.After the inspection visits AIPS members attended at the opening ceremony of the ‘1st Turkey University Games’held in front of the jumping towers.

AIPS memberJorge Morais Araujo Riberio, expressed his satisfaction for creating comfortable working area at the facilities for the journalists.Mr .Riberio,’’As a result of our two day inspection we have seen that spacious environment was created at the facilities for the media members.2 years ago we have made an interview with Mr.Korkmaz and the question was about the risks of the organisation.Mr.Korkmaz stated that there werent any risks.With seeing these magnificent facilities, we saw that Mr.Korkmaz was right. We would like to thank General Coordinator Bekir Korkmaz and TUSF President Prof. Dr. Kemal Tamer on behalf of AIPS.’’

Starting four years ago, the national sport of ski jumping athletes Faik Yüksel, Erzurum, will host the World University Winter Games in having expressed his happiness. Before, Poland, Slovenia, Austria and Germany said Yuksel carried out jumps, Erzurum, each returning from abroad visited the construction of towers, said the jump. Following the completion of the first jump jump towers''to dream''said Yuksel coaches admitted the previous day's successful jump of this yearning was remedied. Very excited at first to jump out onto the ramp to express Rising,''My family and friends waiting for the stands to watch atlayışımı. Çıkışımda ramp they came to my mind. I did not feel fear, stress and excitement, but it has created. I can not think of anything I'm in when I stop down the ramp. This is a very different feeling. The only thing I heard was the cheering and applause after completing Atlayışımı''he said.

ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA-While the construction of the facilities has been completed,landscaping of the facilities is almost finished.Countries that will participate in the organisation are increasing each day.With the application of Bosnia-Herzegovina this number has risen to 58.

ERZURUM HOLDS THE RECORD

So far 58 countries has applied to participate in the games.Previous application record was 50 countries with Austria -Innsbruck .While the accreditation of the countries will continue till the end of December its expected that the participant countries for Erzurum WU will be more than 60.

MOST PARTICIPANT ATHLETES IS FROM RUSSIA

Number of athletes attending the games with most participation are :Russia (263) Turkey (234) China(157) and the least is Malaysia (1) Mexico(1) Denmark and Azerbaijan (2).During the games Erzurum city is expected to host 6 thousand people.

Dance Group’s Training Continues In Full Swing

Dancers selected by 2011 Coordination continues their trainings in Atatürk University Yoncalık Campus.After receiving 8 hours daily training five days a week,dancers will have the chance to share the stage with ‘Fire of Anatolia’dance group.

300 DANCERS WORKS 5 DAYS A WEEK

150 of the dancers whom are women in total of 300 dancers will be trained until the games.Dance instructor Serhat Turak stated that ‘’Dancers who get trained here,will form a group to support the ‘Fire of Anatolia’ choreography.Our aim is to bring together the folklore lovers with Fire of Anatolia and become part of winter games opening -closing ceremonies which always be remembered.

KORKUT: PREPARATIONS ARE CONTINUING AT ITS FULL SPEED

Yakutiye Mayor Ali Korkut,provided information about the work performed by local governments at the city center.Mr. Korkut,said that landscaping works which is carried out around the Yakutiye Madrasah and Lalapaşa Mosque still continues.’’As local government we are also continuing our works on lighting,paving and asphalt both in the city center and Cumhuriyet Street.In addition as Yakutiye Municipality,we are also conducting works in order to bring out the beautiful face of Lalapaşa and Yakutiye Madrasah.Our aim is to bring out the beauty of these pieces which is stuated in the most beautiful part of the city and convert it into a visual show.We have also removed about 700 abandoned building in the city center we are in an effort to speed the urban transformation.’’

ÇINTIMAR: OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE FACILITIES WILL BE HELD ON JANUARY 7

Provincial Director of Youth and Sports Fatih Çintimar,stated that all the construction of the facilities have all been completed.The official opening will be held on January 7.’’At the moment all our works have been completed 100%.Our works on furnishing inside the facilities are continuing.These preparations will be completed at the end of this month.So far two test events has been held in our facilities.In the competitions we have seen that ourselfs ready for the winter games.Mr.Çintimar answered the question whether they will face any problems due to the temperature being above the normal season’’We have no concern about snowing.There is still a time for snow season,we expect to snow in the first week of January.After that the amount of snow will do our job.If needed we have artificial snow system in all our tracks.I’d like to thank firstly our PM,former General Directorate Mehmet Atalay,General Directorate of Youth and Sports Yunus Akgül,Governors and Mayors for their supports.’’

ESENBUĞA: VOLUNTEER APPLICATION WILL END ON DECEMBER 10

Director of Volunteer CommitteeNurinisa Esenbuga,said that the applications will end on December 10.Esenbuğa,stated that the applications were much more then they have expected.’’In the sport organisation 60 % of the success belongs to the volunteers.For our organisation 6500 volunteers have applied.From these volunteers we’ll select 2011 of them.10% of our volunteers will be choosen from outside the city.We have many different volunteer profiles such as housewife,student and those with different professions.’’

EREN:OUR ORGANISATION IS ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE

Environment Director Zeynep Eren,’’We have conducted many environmental project and the last one was ‘White Erzurum,Green Universiade’. Our aim of doing this was to show how sensitive our organisation was towards environment.For this, we’ll collect all the solid waste and recycle them which will exist in the facilities and athletes village.Apart from that we have created a forest around the jumping towers on November 20.Also we collected the stray animals around the facilities.We organise various environmental studies.One of them will be to explain the citizens the damage of plastic bags to environment and we’ll distribute cloth bags instead.’’

Torch race which has started from Tünel, Universiade torch was brought in the hands of the students from İstiklal Street to Taksim. TORCH WILL TOUR THE 19 PROVINCE

After the torch fired in İstanbul, it will tour the 7 province of Turkey and finally reach Erzurum.After the Gripin Concert held in İstanbul Marmara University, Universiade Event Truck will travel to Bursa.Event truck visiting the 19 provinces will then arrive to Erzurum.Universities which the event truck will visit various parties will be held.

Akgül,stated that they have constructed 7 new facilities and jumping towers which is one of the first in Europe and third in the world.’’At the moment the completion of the facilities is at hundred percent.Now its time to host the best opening ceremony of this great event.With organising this great event Turkey will be introduced with new sport branches. 4 years later Turkey will take part at the winter olympics in all branches which will take place in Sochi.Before we did not have any winter sport facilities now we have everything From now on Turkish athletes will take part in the Sochi winter olympics in all branches.’’

Sculpture Symposium Brings Together Art With Erzurum

Held by 2011 General Coordination Culture and Art Committee the symposium of stone sculpture ends.At the closing of the symposium which of 8 pieces have been displayed Mayor Ali Korkut,General Coordinator Bekir Korkmaz, Ataturk University Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts Prof. Dr. Reşat Karcıoğlu,artists and many invited guests took part.

Symposium which was held between October 22-November 8 2010 the results were outstanding.Mayor Ali Korkut stated that the symposium was an important step for the development of art in Erzurum and that it will be a serious contribution to urban culture.

General Coordinator Bekir Korkmaz also said that the work that has been done was very important.’’The resulting works will give us important ideas in terms of the identity of the Yakutiye Mayor.When we take a look at in terms of Erzurum its a significant gain.’’

Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts Prof. Dr. Reşat Karcıoğlu, emphasized that contribution to all kinds of art will be development of the social life. After the speeches Ali Korkut, Bekir Korkmaz and Reşat Karcıoğlu presented certificates to sculpture artists.

Great Interest To Venues Of 2011

Non-governmental organisation group whom consisted of the members and tradesmen have visited the facilities of 2011 WU.
ERZURUM 2011 MEDIA-Event held by Erzurum 2011 General Coordination,Yakutiye Manucipality and Atatürk University career community, non-governmental organisation group had the opportunity to visit the WU facilities.

THEY SAW THE FACILITIES FIRST TIME

Their first visit was to Cemal Gürsel Stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held. Group of approximately 60 people took information about the venues and continuing works from the officials.

Visit held under the supervision of career community members of the University Çağatay Öztürk Furkan Çağlar and Hasan Gokce went off to see the jumping towers located in Kiremitliktepe. Plenty of souvenir photos was taken in front of the towers. They went off to watch the training of the national short track team and played curling in Mecidiye district where the Curling hall is located.Group who have visited the venues stated that they believed that the investments which are made in Erzurum will determine the cities future and with these facilities Erzurum has reached the level to host larger organisations
